#88 is so true, so keep your eyes wide open for the "Wedding Mafia" who charges nearly double just because you're a bride!

The costs associated with weddings have led me to refuse to have a celebration of any kind. My fiance is the one who wants some sort of a party - so let *him* organize it! We are being told over and over again that this day is "the most important day in a woman's life", and then are made to feel guilty if we don't opt for the matching envelopes and tons of flowers. This day is, for me, a personal time - and one that I want to spend ALONE with my fiance, not with everyone and their cousin looking on and landing us and our families in debt.

we're having a backyard wedding next week. I agree, don't use the word wedding when buying or renting. The price for white wedding chair rentals was 1.50 more per chair then a standard blue/brown or black folding. Also check your classifieds for patio tables, we got two cheaper then renting, and we can turn around and sell it or give away. With the money saved by chosing alternate color, you can easily buy a roll of tulle and tie your chair bows. Ebay has tremendous deals on gowns, tuxes, jewerly and silk flowers, just watch shipping costs. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy local. Keep things simple but elegant. Try and do as much as you can yourselves to save money. have fun, congrats

if you are thinking cheese/fruit trays,,save tons by doing yourself. a large purchased tray runs about 60.00 up. a couple bags of supermarket cubed cheese (they even have the flower shaped ones at the market) combined with the grocer fruit bowls near the deli section, get a platter at the dollar store or goodwill, and poof, you just saved about 1/2 your expense. You can roll your own meats the same way. Don't forget the kids, small kids get bored and cranky. Go to a dollar store and pick up some crayons, playing cards, pack of racecars, 1.00 travel game packs, toss them into a decorated plastic baskit to put as the centerpiece and you instantly have a kid friendly table that will keep the kids occupied, happy so the grown ups can enjoy without the crankies.

This is great. I especially liked the one about decorating the cake with your own real flowers. I like the look of the cakes that I have seen on TV decorated with real flowers. My daughter is only 10, but I want to give her a wedding to be proud of, so I ask her if she knows what colors she might want to use on her wedding day just so that we can plan ahead. (I know, I'm pathetic). And, of course, this is the one child that does not want to get married til she has a Ph.D.

Great tips, except for 52. Everyone seems to think this way but you need some waitstaff to cleanup, clear those dirty dishes, and keep the buffet replenished. Also a buffet increases waste, unless these is someone to serve the portions. Generally at buffets the plates going back to the kitchen are still half full because people take more than they really want. Consider the plated meal, single plate, not multi-course, and control cost by controlling consumption.

Hi there,I am Bridezilla

1) Plan ahead: If you get started early, you’ll have the time and flexibility to shop sales, cut coupons, do-it-yourself and comparison shop.
12) Have a friend officiate: If you’re not getting married in a church, doing this can save you the cost of hiring someone to marry you.
20) Announce your save-the-date by email or phone call: If you’ve set your date far in advance or on a busy weekend, you may want to send out a save-the-date announcement. Of course, these cards are an added expense. Instead of paying for paper, printing and postage, send your announcement via email or just pick up the phone to let everyone know.
27) Avoid buying a “wedding” dress: Check out bridesmaid, prom, and department store dresses. You may be able to find a dress that just happens to be white at a fraction of the cost. You’ll do even better if you’re looking for a dress in off-white, champagne, or another color.
35) Carry a single stem instead of a bouquet: A simple and elegant single stem can make just as strong a statement as a large bouquet. You’ll save money on both flowers and your florist’s labor by doing this.
43) Rent plants: Plants can make an attractive background and are an affordable alternative to flowers and other decorations.
50) Buy and cook your own food: If you’re doing a backyard wedding or celebrating in a non-traditional venue, you may be able to bring in your own food. Buy in bulk and make preparation a fun, family affair.
60) Don’t do cake: If you don’t care for cake, don’t have it. It will save you money and you’ll get to eat something you really enjoy. Consider setting up an ice cream or fruit bar instead. You’ll save while still getting what you want.
66) Forget about hard liquor: Hard liquor and mixed drinks cost more than other alcohol. Cut them out and offer choices of beer, wine and soft drinks instead.
74) Hire a high-quality vendor: This may seem counterintuitive, but it’s important to splurge on a professional that can get the job done right. You’ll spend more in the long run if your amateur photographer or band flakes out on you and you’re forced to hire someone else at the last minute.
84)
88) The big “W”: When getting quotes, don’t mention the word “wedding” until you have to. Some venues and vendors charge a premium for them. Say it’s an event or family gathering instead and hold them to it unless they can justify extra charges.
