The history of ink can be traced to 12th century B.C; however in this technologically driven era ink is mostly used in ball point pens and printers. The use of ink in printers and the decreasing costs of printers have opened new markets for ink. There are many simple ways to save money on ink while purchasing it as well as using it.

Buying in bulk. Buying any product in bulk will reduce the cost of ink and it can be bought either on the internet or in the nearest stationary store. This is particularly beneficial for business purposes as the shelf life of the ink may not be compatible if ordered in bulk for personal use.

Recycled ink. This type of ink is less costly compared to new ink and money can be saved by opting for recycled ink and recycled ink cartridges. Many companies have their own websites from which recycled ink can be bought.

Shipping discounts. If ink is bought online then you can qualify for free shipping if you are purchasing the product in bulk. Many companies offer free shipping and you will end up saving time, money and effort required to buy it from a store.

Refilling. Refilling the ink yourselves can save a lot of money instead of buying the cartridge every time and there are many companies, big and small that cater to this need. The refilling of ink is common worldwide except in the United States where ink refilling devices are available only on the internet. This is because of the complete control of the manufacturer over the retail market in the United States.

Avoiding branded products. Buying ink that is not manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer can save a lot of money and this type of ink brands instead of the manufacturers. However the warranty on the printer may become void if any other generic type of ink cartridge is used.

Sales. There are many websites and stores that conduct sales and offer ink cartridges and ink at discounted prices. These can be found in the local supermarket or on the internet. This is a much better option than buying the manufacturer’s recommended cartridges. Again many manufacturers claim that this will void the warranty.

Thrift stores. Thrift stores are the inevitable places where you can find not only cheap ink but also other printing related goods at discounted prices. However there is a caveat here as used ink cartridges or even packed ones may prove themselves to be detrimental to the printer.

Ink refill kits. If you have decided to refill the ink yourself then an ink refill kit will be required which can be bought in a store or online as well. It will give step by step instructions on how to refill the ink yourselves. However many people find this method complicated, messy and frustrating.

Compatible ink. Compatible ink is the type which suits the prototype that was used in the printer when it was bought. Many online stores and companies offer to sell ink that is compatible with your model and make of the printer. This is another way of saving money on ink as it is similar to a generic brand and a little lower in quality.
