An iphone is a multimedia GSM (global system for mobile communication) smartphone that has internet connectivity. It was launched by Apple Inc. in 2007 in the United States before being marketed worldwide. There are some ways in which you can save money on an iphone while purchasing one or when using it.
Various plans.
There are various plans available in the market, such as the AT&T family plan, that is cheaper compared to other plans. A simple
internet search for such plans will ensure that you do not miss out on opportunities for saving. Other programs such as the referral program where you can get a discount for referring certain number of people to join a particular service are also a means to reduce spending. These plans usually offer a discount of gift cards which can be used to buy further products.
Other services.
One of the add-on services that can be skipped is the Mobileme service; opt for open source software such as Funambol that provides free use of the internet for services such as E-mails. However the catch is that these types of services are unable to sync photos and files but it is open source software so this development may be available soon.
Models.
The three basic models include the iphone, the iphone3G and the iphone 3GS; the cheapest being the iphone which was discontinued in 2008. The iphone 3G was also discontinued in 2009 however the 8GB model is still being sold along with the iphone 3GSM. Opting for the 8 GB model will save you money instead of choosing the Iphone3GS.
Sell the ipod.
The iphone may have lesser space compared to the ipod however it is an advanced internet connected multimedia device that can replace the ipod and perform similar functions. Selling the ipod will substantially reduce the net amount paid towards the iphone.
The contracts.
Avoid choosing a long term contract as it unnecessarily binds the customer when phone tariffs are continually decreasing. Going for a short term plan instead of a twenty four month contract will save money even though the latter appears to be lucrative.
Online deals.
Online deals are a much better option to buying it in an Apple store since this saves money for the vendor and they may pass this discount to the customer in the form of a cash-back. Sites such as eBay and other bidding websites are another option for someone who is searching for refurbished products.
Upgrades.
Avoid upgrading the model just because it is trendy and chic to do so; the newer models are costlier and have features that you may not end up using. Moreover upgrading the model will require paying off the existing contract. Searching for a discounted offer (online or otherwise) if you choose to upgrade is better than just blindly switching to the newer model.
Free applications.
There are over 148 free applications available on the
internet and choosing for these options is cheaper; obviously as they are free. A Google search will reveal more information about such free applications. Delete and upgrade your free applications as once the applications are purchased or downloaded all the upgrades at a later date are free. What this means is that if unsatisfied with a particular application you can delete it and wait for it to become upgraded and then download it.
Refurbished iphones.
Refurbished iphones are offered by many including Apple Inc. and can be procured on- line or by walking into one of the Apple outlets. Buying them on eBay or other sites will further reduce costs as the phones in an Apple outlet are usually costlier. If you want to go for branded refurbished iphones then AT&T is another frugal option.
Skype on iphone.
Skype is a net based phone service that has gained popularity in the last year. This application can now be merged with the Apple platform. This will enable users to make free phone calls to other skype users via Wi-Fi. This will also reduce the price of making calls to a landline. Skype for iphone will use numbers directly from your address book which will avoid duplicated contact lists.
Google.
Apple Inc. has reported to the FCC (Federal communication commission) that Google alters the basic functionality of Apple and replaces it with its own features. Apple Inc has not approved Google’s proposal for its voice application. Google has also filed a response letter to FCC stating that it has no further proposals pending with Apple. Inc. All these developments come amidst speculation whether VoIP (Voice over Internet protocol) can dramatically decrease the cost of long distance communication. However, Apple Inc. has commented that the proposal has not been rejected but stands unapproved.
