How To Save Money On Transportation

As the world gradually comes out of the financial slumber of recession, its fall-out is still affecting people and companies around the world. Transportation is no exception. The recent bail out of major car manufacturers by governments and the skyrocketing prices of crude oil have sent shivers down the spine of investors and consumers alike. However some tips may help in cutting down expenses incurred due to transportation.

Carpool. This is an effective method of saving money with the help of community members who are like minded. Carpooling is not uncommon however some people reject carpooling just because of the time restraints and the inconvenience of traveling with others. Even if you do not opt for carpooling, using one car for all household members will result in savings.

Maintenance. It is important that the vehicle is maintained in order to give a good mileage and be cost effective in the long run. Periodic oil checks, regular servicing and maintenance of adequate tire pressures are key elements when it comes to saving money on transportation.

Public transport. The best way to save on transportation is to simply use the subway or the bus instead of using your car everyday. This can be done on a couple of days in a week so as to avoid discomfort everyday and save money and at the same time keep the car in good shape by using it sparingly.

Coupons. There are numerous auto dealers and companies that offer coupons for maintenance and servicing of a vehicle. These can be found on-line as well as in stores and will help in reducing the cost of transportation if you do not want to use public transport or other methods mentioned earlier.

Used cars. Used cars are a much better option if you want to buy new means of transportation. These are available in many auctions, sales, junk yards sales and on the internet as well. Alternating between your used car and public transport will save money in the long run and increase the life of the vehicle.

The make. The type of car that is being used dictates the amount spent towards maintenance and gas. Sports utility vehicles (SUV’s) use up more fuel compared to other cars. Avoid buying such vehicles and you can save up to twenty percent of the amount spent for transportation.

Insurance. Car insurances rates drop as a person gets older and shopping around for one if you are young is another way to ensure that you receive the best deals. Insurances typically work like credit ratings and reward patrons who are responsible and mature. Making sure that you do not run into problems like personal or credit card debt is not only important for saving on transport but it also affects other financial aspects of our lives.

Comprehensive coverage and deductibles. If you are using a low priced car then opting out of the comprehensive and collision coverage will help save money because the insurance cost may turn out to be more than the cost of the vehicle itself. Raise the deductibles since deductibles are inversely proportional to premiums and you will save on premiums in the long run; especially if you are a good driver and have no record of accidents in the past.
