Green Roofs: Cooler Concrete Jungles

A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or fully covered with vegetation using a growing medium and planted on top of a waterproofing membrane or surface. Such roofing is useful mostly in urban areas where the heat island effect can be reduced along with cooling and heating costs. The heat island effect is the built up of heat due to urbanization and insolation. Insolation in turn can be defined as the heat emitted by buildings and structures after they have soaked it.
