The Greener Diet

The eco-friendly choices at the disposal of an average consumer are myriad and one of these is a diet which has less harmful effect on Mother Nature. Many people may confuse a green diet to be one in which there are more veggies or greens. This is only true to a certain extent. The products that we use for cooking and the raw food that we buy has an enormous impact on the environment. This impact is usually not positive since the human race is slowly destroying various food chains around the world causing depletion of many species of edible animals and plants.

Organic Option: Opting for organic food products instead of buying genetically modified ones can be the first step towards a green diet. These food products are grown without any engineering and have less harmful impact on nature and also have better nutritional value. Choosing organic vegetables from an organic farm can go a long way in improving your as well as the health of our environment.

Red Meat: Reducing the amount of red meat in your diet can also bring about positive changes as far as environment is concerned. This is not because a person should be a vegan but because red meat producing animals consume humungous amounts of resources in the form of grains till they are slaughtered. Cutting down the consumption of red meat and choosing the appropriate substitute such as fish and eggs can make a huge difference.

Your Own Supply: Another option is to grow your own food and at first it may seem improbable but is usually possible to a certain extent. Even people living in apartments can grow a few greens and tomatoes. Numerous vegetables can be grown in a small garden to augment the supply of fresh veggies and cut down on grocery expenses.

Avoid Plastic: Plastic bags are still used in many parts of the world and avoiding the use of plastic for buying food supplies is advisable. Reusing grocery bags and containers will also help in preventing waste. The amount of garbage produced by over populated countries such as India, China and the United States is staggering. It therefore becomes important to either recycle plastic or reuse containers and bags.

Imported food: It is important to know where your food is coming from since edible material that has traveled a long distance uses up fuel and other resources. Avoiding food that is imported and making use of locally manufactured or grown products is good for the economy and also ensures freshness of the product.

Fair Trade: Fair trade products are those that are grown by low-income families or people without destroying the environment. Deforestation and making space for growing inelastic commodities or cash crops such as cocoa, coffee and tea has taken its toll on the environment. Making sure that you use fair trade products may in turn ensure a greener tomorrow.
